Trip to Hue & the DMZ

As the boys had a weeks holiday from school we took a three day trip to Hue and while there went on a day tour to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ). It was an insite into the American war which the kids and I found quite informative. In 1954 Vietnam was partitioned into North and South, creating the DMZ that saw some of the heaviest fighting in the American War.

Some other things we've been up to this week

Ancient Vietnamese house in Hoi An
Volunteer Steph taking Josh for a spin
Ancient well in Hoi An - Ba Le Well. People come to the well every day to get water that is specifically needed as key ingredient in the local staple dish of Cau Lau - a yummy savoury noodle & stock dish often served with sliced pork, crispy croutons and salad/mint/ mix on top. Cant be made without water from this well.

'Push me-Pull me' used by many of the local disabled people in Hoi An to get around.
The result of Pete's first Vietnamese cooking class that he had this week - Barbequed Squid stuffed with pork & vegies. Delicious!

Highlight for the day today for Josh was catching a Gecko before school and having him on his shoulder as a short term companion. He managed to negotiate with his teacher Mr Mark, that if it wasnt a distraction, he could wear him on his shoulder in class. So Josh wore him for the morning in class, released him for lunch break, caught him again and wore him on his shoulder for the afternoon before letting him go again at the end of school - what more could a boy possibly ask for from school ???
Last night we caught up with Steph, our other volunteer friend and some of the Lifestart Foundation crew. Steph, Pete & I dinked (? dunk) the 3 boys into Old Hoi An town, across the bridge and over the other side (a 10 min ride from our place) to a restaurant overlooking the river and the lights of Hoi An. Just as we all arrived and got inside, a huge downpour errupted.
Had a fun meal with the boys all ordering a coconut each - served as a drink & dessert all in one along with mealtime entertainment trying to get into the thing.
We all parted company afterwards and Pete, Steph & I dinked the boys back over the river to our now-favourite DVD store so I could get a new CD for the exercise group we are running at Lifestart Foundation. Have been listening to the same music for the last 2.5 weeks at work & decided it was time to freshen it up.
Waved good bye to Steph as she headed back to Danang & the 5 of us (on 3 bikes) rode home in another downpour. The boys thought it was fantastic riding round the streets at night and in the pouring rain.

View from our top balcony in the rain, looking down onto out lane
It's an unusual (usual here) mix of urban and rural. We are surrounded by other houses and are just off one of the busy main drags out to one of the beaches and yet there is a corn plot and rice paddy along our lane and we wake to the sound of roosters crowing, frogs croaking, dogs barking, kids playing, local public speaker blaring,

New Pet

We aquired a new pet this afternoon - a turtle !!
The Lifestart Foundation founder , Karen,  has 2 Vietnamese adult sons, one of them found the turtle at a local Pagoda and rescued it from surely becoming someone's meal. The turtle (now referred to as 'Terry') was at the Lifestart shop when I called in there this afternoon and Karen wondered if the boys would like it as their temporary pet. Fortunately for the boys, our new home has come complete with built in above-ground fishpond which is the perfect home for an unfortunate turtle.
He's here on a 1 week trial.

Starting School at Greenshoots, Hoi An, Vietnam

Today I started school and I met new friends and I did Maths, English and Phonics. I met another Finn but he spells it Fynn. He's about my age. I also met Jack & Max 2 brothers, Theo (Fynn's brother) and I met Georgia who's 13. We are doing the Lion King musical and I'm going to be Zulu, a bird. We went out for tea tonight and I had a hamburger and chips and a local Mocktail.       Finn

today i started school at greenshoots which is a five min walk from our house, first in my school schedule was maths and i got help from the other resident 13 year old jack, for snack we had fruit shakes, after snack we had english and we were working on peoms, for lunch we had burritos, for the last periods we had music and science. for dinner i had noodles with seafood and a mocktail- josh

On Monday 8 of October 2012 I started school in Vietnam at Greenshoots International school that is a 7 minute walk from our house,  it is more is convinient to walk rather than drive.
The first subject I did at school was maths, we did converting fractions into decimals, I helped a kid called Dom with his maths.
Next subject was english; in our lesson we did poems and tankas (t-o-n-k-er-s), wich are japanese love poems.

This Week

This week we have settled on a place to live, negotiated a rental arrangement (complex), moved out of the hotel and deposited all of our luggage and belongings into our new abode. We were lucky to have some help working our way through this process from a local expat real estate guy.
The boys have had 2 visits to their new school Greenshoots which is about a 7 min walk from our new address either down our lane, along a busy road and back up another lane or the back way through a network of small laneways, that we are unfamiliar with at this point. They went on Wed for lunch with the other kids, which consisted of a bowl of Cau Lao - the local noodle dish with yummy salady things and a bit of meat & croutons on top. Then they jumped into some soccer they had going on in the afternoon. Yesterday (Fri) they went back for some of the afternoon where the kids were planning a large mural project with the art teacher for a wall that backs onto where the primary/middle school is currently based.
Monday they will get started fulltime.
The last day or 2 we've had Tropical Storm warnings hovering around this area with some kind of weather system brewing out over the ocean towards the Phillipines. It was headed our way but now seems to have swung south. Despite that we are getting some heavy rain and had a few big gusts of wind strong enough to blow a few trees & powerlines down nearby. It has made us get a bit organised for the upcoming rain/stormy season of Oct/Nov and we now have a cupboard full up with candles, matches, extra water, tinned food, rice etc for when the storms kick in and power is out, roads are floded.
So far the house seems to be nice & waterproof but I guess I shouldnt speak too soon.
This week at work I went out and did an outreach visit to a shelter for young adults with disabilities where they get vocational training and a place to stay. It was a 45 min ride on the back of my Vietnamese co-worker's motorbike back towards Danang. Not bad in fine weather but not sure how we'll go in the wet. Am going to explore all of my transport options and see what works best. Next week I'm going up on the local bus to try that way. It will be a weekly visit at this stage. Was also asked to step into a small orphanange attached to the centre while I was out there. Some very dedicated staff and some small people with very difficult stories. Hard.
There is another adult shelter I am going to try some outreach at once a week, which is much closer, in Hoi An. This week a team of us went over there and did a big cleanup job on a room that they have made available for me and my Vietnamese co-worker, Sang to use.
We have an exercise group running 3 times a week in Hoi An at the Free Disability Centre which is the building that I'm largely based at and several of the women who work at the Lifestart Foundation workshop making & selling their craft & art, attend this group.
Anoter highlight of the last couple of weeks was being invited along to the local Disabled Peoples Group meeting. We arrived at the meeting, at a local Pagoda, and realised we were the reason for the meeting. We were sat up the front on tables in front of a small crowd of 50 - 70 people and their families and were introduced. Karen (Lifestart Foundations's founder) made a short speech which was then interpreted and then applause !!
Tomorow we may try the trip back to Danang to do some top up shopping for bulk food supplies. We've had a nice few days of eating out a lot, there so many good & cheap restaurants but the rate these boys are eating we are going to need serious wholesale supplies so we dont become destitute in the next few weeks. I swear Josh has grown another couple of inches in the 2 weeks I was here before them all and that speed of growth comes with a large appetitie attached ! Even $5 main courses add up when you need 3 of them to fill you up.

We have found some where to live for our stay in Hoi An!

Finally settled on a house close to school (a short bike ride through back alleys from this house) and not to far from Al's work and town. 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. We passed on the "Green House" in amongst the rice paddies.

The majority of houses are built on narrow small blocks and often right next to each other with little back or front yard.

Lounge area looking into the kitchen.
Looking down from the stairs to the 1st floor at the front entrance.

The Boys have arrived in Vietnam!!!

We made it to Vietnam with all going smoothly and no stress. We left at 6:15am to travel to the airport and arrived at Danang airport at 9:30pm (12:30am Melbourne time) where we met Alison, jumped into a taxi and headed to the hotel in Hoi An.

Josh, Lachy, and Finn cooling of in the hotel pool.

Walking the streets of Hoi An
We did the holiday thing and went for a boat tour along the river Thu Bon. All the boys had a go at stearing the boat which was a bit of fun.

"Cool drink". It was a warm day and we stopped to buy sunglasses and then a refreshing drink. Lachy had a mango smoothy.
It was a good first day looking around and checking out the sites and experiencing a taste of the culture.
