Tet in Hoi An

Flowers for sale in Hoi An for Tet decoration

Last night was Tet in Vietnam the Lunar New Year - begining of the Year of the Snake. We all climbed onto our bikes at 11pm and cycled in to Old Town to see the festivities. Every house we passed had all of their doors and windows open to the new year evening. The town was full of excited people of all ages waiting to see in the new year. There was a sensational lantern display along the river and then we joined the crowds lining the river waiting for the fireworks. Five to midnight it started pouring with rain and just before the clock struck they let rip with an unbelievable fireworks display that just seemed to go on and on and on. We were standing right underneath them all - only about 50m away from where they were exploding up off the ground - perhaps a bit dangerous in hindsight - but it was great to be right in the middle of it all. We go soaked but was worth it. Soon after the fireworks finished the rain stopped and the crowd, beeping & hooting all of their horns, started making their way home. Happy chaos.
Cycling the streets home it was magical watching all the older members of every household out on the streets burning their offerings.
